Every Day Action was created and founded by Hillary Cohen and Samantha Luu, two Directors Guild of America Assistant Directors hoping to change the way Hollywood sees food waste. Both women, having worked over 10 years on sets, have continually asked why the leftover gourmet food from catering is thrown out and not donated. Now, this 501(c)3 organization takes perceived waste and redistributes it to the homeless throughout the Los Angeles area. Working closely with Film & Television sets, they take food that would have been thrown away and redistribute it directly to those in need in homeless camps and community fridges throughout the region. Hillary Cohen challenges everyone to ask yourself, "What did you do today to help your community or someone in need?" what are we crafting? These kits contain essential personal care items like toothpaste, socks, toothbrushes, combs, feminine hygiene products, soap sacks, and other essentials. We have 4 bag options: 1) Up-cycled Feed bags - Using the model of Every Day Action and taking perceived waste and redistributing it: Our primary bag patterns is an up-cycled bag that reclaims dog food or feed bags and transforms them in to reusable tote bags! We have videos below, here is the basic supply list and how to prep them for sewing: Materials: Feed bags (made of tarp-like plastic) Washing machine Tide with Oxyclean, Oxyclean, or baking soda Strong thread (Bonded UV thread recommended) Heavy Duty Polyester ok. Prepare the bags: Cut off the top and bottom of the bag. Remove any remaining crumbs. Clean the feed bags: Fill your washing machine tub as full as possible. You may have to override your tub's settings to ensure the tank is full Use Tide with Oxyclean, or Oxyclean or Baking Soda with your detergent Avoid harsh chemicals like Borax or bleach. Hang the bags to dry and i f there's still odor or oil, rewash Tips: If a bag doesn't survive the washing process, it wouldn't have survived as a bag for our partner. Toss it and be glad you didn't sew something that wouldn't last! For a larger number of bags or to involve kids, consider using a kiddie pool outside to wash them. Fill it with water, add dish soap and scrub the bags. Rinse thoroughly. By following these steps, you can transform old feed bags into durable and eco-friendly reusable bags to distribute with hygiene supplies to people experiencing homelessness. 2) Tote Bag from a Large Tarp - You can create tote bags that are functional, reusable and very sturdy using a tarp from the hardware store! A camo or dark one is preferred. 3) Large Heavy Duty Tote Bags - You can use our patterns for the Super Tote or similar pattern and create a large heavy duty bag. See below for fabric. 4) Adult sized drawstring backpacks - Sewn drawstring backpacks are a great option as they pull close and keep items from getting lost. See below for fabric. Our neighbors who are unsheltered need bags that are strong and weather resistant. Please use darker colors so they are less likely to show dirt and and stand out, which can be important for safety. Great fabrics: 5) Soap Sacks - Knit/Crochet soap sacks will be placed in hygiene bags. 6) Warm Winter Items- Collecting winter items September 15th through January 30th. They establish medical clinics in rural Ghana that provide care previously unavailable in those areas. They also have a program called "Keep Girls in School Campaign". The Yonkofa Project has teamed up with Crafting Change to provide menstrual hygiene kits to middle school girls, bandages for the rural clinics and hospitals and items for the Half Assini NICU. what are we crafting? DON'Ts: - No camouflage fabric, as it's exclusively used by the military in Ghana. - Avoid religious and holiday-themed prints (Easter Bunnies, 4th of July, Thanksgiving, Santa). - Exclude fabrics depicting drugs, alcohol, tobacco, or weapons. 2) Reusable Menstrual Pads Each kit we make includes 2 medium and 2 heavy pads. Pads must have 1 or 2 layers of Zorb, a bottom layer of PUL, and Kam Snaps closures. Choose dark, colorful, patterned, or busy fabrics for your topper to help hide stains. Use any template shape in sizes between 8.5" and 10.5" in length are accepted. When shipping your completed pads, please label them by absorbency and length for easier sorting. We offer resources for pad construction, including a video tutorial for first-time makers. Contact us for assistance or to order discount supplies. . KAM SNAPS: Each pad must have 2 size 20 Kam Snaps applied on the wing. Refer to our video tutorial for assistance. If applying your own snaps, test each snap multiple times to ensure security, functionality, and that satisfying snap sound. Don't have a Kam-Snap tool? Ship the pads without snaps, and we'll apply them for you at Crafting Change HQ. Interested in purchasing Kam Snap supplies? We recommend buying directly from Kam Snaps, a family-owned small business. They offer a great starter set with pliers and snaps! Check that kit out here , or browse the rest of their site! 3) Wet Bags Wet bags serve two main functions: holding soiled pads while girls are at school and serving as a vessel for cleaning pads at home. Wet bags must be waterproof. We have one approved pattern for these bags, which has proven effective. Watch our video tutorial on properly sealing these bags. For any questions, email Martha for assistance. 4) Sewn Soap Sack The Sewn Soap Sack made from a washcloth is tailored for The Menstrual Hygiene Kit Resembling a washcloth, it offers familiarity the for girls while featuring a twill loop for convenient hanging and drying of soap. Please ensure accurate measurements and avoid using white or light colors as these will be used during menstrual cycles and get stained with blood. 5) Crochet & Knit Bandages- We're crafting cotton bandages for rural clinics/hospitals in Western Ghana. Only 5 approved yarns and one specific pattern are permitted for this project. Participants must be experienced crocheters or knitters capable of checking gauge. While the pattern is simple, consistency and gauge are crucial. Start with 2 skeins of yarn for your first 2 bandages that will be quality checked by our medical advisor before ordering more yarn. Find all necessary information on this information sheet. 7) Receiving Blankets for the NICU- We're creating swaddling/receiving blankets for the NICU at Half Assini Government Hospital in Half Assini, Ghana. Blankets should measure between 36x36 and 40x40 inches square. All blankets, regardless of style, must have finished hems. Narrow rolled serger hems are recommended for single-layer blankets if you have a serger. Accepted fabric options include: Single layer flannel 2-layer quilting cotton Single or double layer jersey Single or double layer double gauze UNDERWEAR : Each kit includes 2 pairs of underwear in girls' sizes 12/14. We make a small amount of kits with size 10/12 and size 14/16. Additional pairs in size 8 and women's size 5 are provided to schools for girls who may need sizes outside of what we offer. Consider purchasing from our Amazon Wish List or taking advantage of BOGO sales at Fruit of the Loom, Black Friday deals or check local retailers like Target/Walmart for clearance items. We always need underwear for our kits in Girls size 12 and 14. ***PLEASE NOTE: We kindly ask that all menstrual pads comply with our guidelines for safety and effectiveness. We offer approved supplies at discounted prices for your convenience. Please feel free to reach out to us for assistance or to obtain the necessary supplies. For 2 of their programs, The Independent Supported Living Program (up to a 6 Month stay) and the Mobile Housing Navigation Center (up to a 120 Day stay), the young adults have the opportunity to stay for longer periods of time and settle down while they look for permanent housing, educational opportunity and jobs. We will be helping the young adults in these 2 programs with blankets and pillowcases to make them feel more at home during this transition. CRITICAL INFORMATION: We have been asked to not use "Pride" themed fabric or fabric that in anyway would identify the owner of the items as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community. It is important to remember that these young adults are in a very vulnerable situation often having been displaced from their home due to their sexual orientation or gender identity. Pillowcases: Pattern: Use the Burrito Pillowcase pattern for sewing. This pattern creates a clean and professional finish. Fabric: You may use either cotton or flannel fabric for the pillowcases. These fabrics are durable and comfortable. Fabric Restrictions: Please avoid using fabrics that depict weapons, drugs, alcohol, or themes related to pride, rainbows, or any fabric/symbols that could "out" someone as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community. Quality: Ensure that stitches are secure and seams are finished neatly for durability. Blankets/Quilts/Lapghans: Accepted Techniques: blankets can be sewn, knitted, or crocheted. The ideal size for blankets is 45 inches by 60 inches (114 cm by 152 cm), which provides comfort and practicality for recipients. Fabric and Yarn: Use high-quality yarns and fabrics that are cozy and durable. Please refer to our master yarn list for suggestions on suitable yarns for blankets. Avoid using yarns or fabrics in colors of the rainbow. Please don't make blankets overly scrappy. Fabric and Yarn Restrictions: Avoid using fabrics that depict weapons, drugs, alcohol, or themes related to pride, rainbows, or any symbols that could "out" someone as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community. Quality: Ensure your blankets are well-crafted with secure stitches or seams, reflecting the care and dedication of our volunteers. Twin Size Quilts They are looking for approximately 12 Twin Size Quilts per year. If you have any interest in constructing some truly lovely, warm, twin size quilts that residents of their Independent Supported Living Program could come home to, they would love that. Size: 70"x90" Fabric Restrictions: Avoid using fabrics that depict weapons, drugs, alcohol, or themes related to pride, rainbows, or any symbols that could "out" someone as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community. Fabric: Cotton & Batting Technique: Sewn Only Winter Items For unsheltered LGBTQIA+ young adults in Nashville, please follow these guidelines: Accepted Items: We are looking for hats, cowls, scarves, gloves, mittens, and fingerless gloves. Technique: Sewn, knitted, or crocheted. Color Preferences: Use subdued colors such as browns, blacks, navy blue, forest greens, etc. These colors help the young adults blend into their surroundings and feel safe. Fabric and Yarn Restrictions: Avoid using colors of the rainbow or Pride-inspired patterns. The young adults served by Nashville Launch Pad often come from difficult backgrounds where their gender identity or sexual orientation was not accepted. It’s important that the items do not make them stand out. Quality: Ensure your items are well-crafted and durable, providing warmth and comfort throughout the winter months. The Remissionaries 01 Read about our partner charity and see the items we are crafting 02 Read the Project Must-Knows 03 Pick a pattern from our approved or suggested pattern collection 04 Shipping address, print a care slip & tally your donation About The Remissionaries is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization based in Las Vegas, NV. Founded by a breast cancer survivor/thriver, and aimed at helping women undergoing chemotherapy treatment for breast cancer. Providing a comfort crate at the beginning of or during treatment can help alleviate some common side effects of chemotherapy. A small gesture that can make a big impact in the life of a woman with breast cancer. what are we crafting? Item Requested Craft Type Quantity Requested Quantity Still Needed Soft Cotton Beanies Knit/Crochet 50 33 Bags (Adults) Sew 50 18 Quilts/Afghans ALL 50 37 project must-knows Before you begin crafting, please read the Project Overview Sheet. There are lots of details for each item. Because you are crafting for patients going through cancer treatments, special care needs to be paid to the yarn you use, etc. Please ensure you have read ALL the details for the patterns and yarn choices before you begin! The Remissionaries Project Overview Sheet Updated 4/1/24: currently their only need is Lapghans: Lapghans (Knit/Crochet) for snuggling with during chemotherapy, no color restrictions, in fact The Remissionaries tells us they LOVE bright colors! Try for a finished size of 36” to 45” wide by 6 0 ” to 70” long. Any pattern is fine. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Soft Cotton Beanies -(Knit/Crochet) These need to be made with soft cotton yarn or cotton/bamboo yarn for patients going through chemo treatments. Make sure the ‘cotton’ yarn you use is 100% cotton and please do not use any ‘craft’ yarn. Our partner has requested NO polyester, so check the label as some of these brands have a “cotton blend” that looks very similar to all cotton. Choose undyed, or pale-shade yarn, to minimize the amount of dye in the yarn that might be in contact with sensitive skin. As you look at hat beanie patterns, please bear in mind that ones with a lot of ‘texture’ can be irritating to sensitive skin so try to keep your pattern as smooth and bump-free as possible. Info sheet Tote Bags - Cute tote bags made from quilting cotton or lightweight canvas or tasteful denim are perfect for patients to carry items with them to chemotherapy appointments. Any pattern is ok. Pocket Prayer Quilts( Heart Hugs) - The Remissionaries would like all of the pocket quilts they receive to have hearts attached so they can go to anyone, no matter their religious preference. You can use buttons, charms, be creative just ensure they are securely fastened. We have a thoughtful Project Overview Sheet put together by Kathy Lawrence for this project, please review! You can attach the poem yourself by laminating it, or know that we will send them a stack of ready to attach poems if you aren't able. 4) Quilts - (Sewn) A snuggly blanket is always appreciated by those going through chemo. They have asked for quilted cotton type lapghans and not fleece. We recommend a lapghan designed in your choice of pattern with two layers of quilting cotton, batting or fleece in the middle and a binding. They can be machine quilted, or ‘sew as you go’ strip quilts. Aim for a finished size of 36”x48 to 45”x60" Port Pillows - (Sewn/Crochet)- This project is fast and easy. If you are sewing, The Remissionaries strongly prefers the Port Pillow with wings. . Port pillows really need to be stuffed FIRMLY to be effective. Please ensure you are really stuffing your port pillows nice and firm! Mini Tissue Holders - (Sewn/Crochet) This is a great scrap busting project! We have both crochet and sewn patterns available. Please ensure to check the seam allowance on the sewn pattern and to buy one pack of tissues to use at home to ensure your tissue holder fits a pack before you send it. Soft Scalp Washing Pads These are like a face scrubby, but need to be made from organic cotton worsted yarn, that stays soft for the sensitive scalps. Please choose un-dyed, or pale colors, so as to limit the amount of dye that may come in contact with sensitive skin. Rice Bag Heating Pads - These small flannel heating pads are super fast and easy to sew up. Christina will fill them up with rice and sew them closed, so all you have to do is create the empty shells following our super easy pattern and video tutorial created by Carol Grape carol@craftingchange.org Please remember to use COTTON THREAD and leave one entire short end open for filling with rice. Other Items they collect: Inside the comfort crates The Remissionaries distributes, they include many easy to find items! If you have extra room in your box, maybe you will consider including a few or check around your house to see if you have extras laying around! We are specifically helping them with their Leaving A Legacy project. The Leaving a Legacy project was created in 2017 as a memorial to Patrice Berman's beloved husband, Eddie. Patrice, the Founder of Raising Hope For Others, took her grief and turned it into this project. His giving spirit and compassion for all is reflected in their comfort bags. The charitable bags are given for free to anyone in need of comfort. This serves a local need, bringing neighbors together to support each other during trying times. The contents of each bag are specifically chosen to meet the needs of its recipient. what are we crafting? Item Requested Craft Type Quantity Requested Quantity Still Needed Chemo Caps Sew/Knit/Crochet 150 13 Bags (for Women) Sew 150 33 Cosmetic Bags Sew 150 48 project must-knows 1) Tote Bags (Sewn) - This location will accept most any of our quilting cotton or light canvas tote bag patterns that are approximately 16"x16" to 18"x18" in size. At this time they are requesting fabrics to appeal to women. Leaving a Legacy reports to us that their favorite tote is the Two Tone Fabric Tote. 2) Heart Hugs - Our little square of love. Please make these with heart buttons or charms so they have no religious connotations and can be used by anyone for whatever purpose they choose. 3) Port Pillow - This protective device attaches to the seat belt of the car to soften it when going over where a person's port may be. Stuff them very firm so they do the most good. 4) Cosmetic Bags - Any pattern that will finish at approximately 7"x9" is acceptable to Leaving A Legacy. They do prefer a boxed bottom. They fill the cosmetic bag with smaller items like chapstick and lotion before putting in the tote. 5) Chemo Caps - (Sewn/Knit/Crochet) We have many wonderful patterns for sewing, knitting or crocheting up soft and comfortable chemo caps. If knitting/crocheting these caps please follow our approved/tested yarn list. It is especially important for the sensitive scalps of a patient going through chemotherapy to get the right kind of yarn. Our Advisory Board spends a lot of time testing yarns so you don't have to. Please trust that they have our recipients best interest at heart. We have a wide selection of yarns at every price point available on our approved list. They have expanded their mission to now distribute their bags of love to children in foster care, those that are unsheltered and victims of domestic violence. what are we crafting? Item Requested Craft Type Quantity Requested Quantity Still Needed Warm Winter Gloves/Mittens Sew/Knit/Crochet 100 76 project must-knows 1. Burrito Pillow Case- These are for all ages 5-18. All pillows are all the standard size pillow no matter the age you are making for. It is appreciated if fun fabrics are used, and kids love licensed prints like Marvel, Comic Book characters like Batman and Superman, Harry Potter, Disney. The pillowcase is made from three coordinating materials. The finished size should be 20”-21” wide by 30-32” long which fits a standard pillow. Please use soft, non scratchy material: woven quilter’s cotton, woven cotton blends as well as flannel. Fabric prints to avoid would be ones with drugs, alcohol, weapons religious, or holiday prints fabric with the words mommy, daddy or family or any variant (grandma, etc.) 2. Knit/Crochet Soap Sacks- Please ensure your soap sacks end up being the standard size of a soap sack 4"x6". When soap is distributed it has to be in it's original packaging which is often a box. Often soap sacks are too small. You can use a 4x6 index card as a handy guide to keep in your project bag. It is a good idea to check your pattern every once in awhile to ensure you are meeting the size guidelines. Thank you. 3. Winter hats & gloves in assorted sizes; toddlers, kids, teens. These can be sewn fleece or knit/crochet. Winter is cold in Kansas, please use patterns that are warm! They need these in many sizes from toddlers to teens (which wear adult size) and it is not important for us to track what size you send as the items we send will only be part of what they receive. So send whatever size you like! S.A.C.K. 01 Read about our partner charity and see the items we are crafting 02 Read the Project Must-Knows 03 Pick a pattern from our approved or suggested pattern collection 04 Shipping address, print a care slip & tally your donation this is how it works About Stacy Wiener, Founder of S.A.C.K., discovered through volunteering at food pantries, that there was a lack of essential toiletries available. One key reason is that people cannot use government subsidies, such as food stamps, to purchase them. When it comes to deciding on whether to eat vs. buy soap and shampoo, the choice becomes obvious. So, S.A.CK. was created to help fill this need. In September of 2017, S.A.C.K. (Supporting A Community with Kindness), was started as a grassroots effort to connect people from all over the world while crocheting/knitting soap sacks and then donating them (with a bar of soap in each one) to homeless shelters, food pantries, veteran clinics, relief efforts and social service agencies. what are we crafting? Item Requested Craft Type Quantity Requested Quantity Still Needed Soap Sacks ALL 250 0 project must-knows Crafting Change loves to make soap sacks and distribute them to our partner charities throughout the country. Often times we meet their needs really quickly. S.A.C.K and Crafting Change both encourage our volunteers who love making soap sacks to look within their local communities to see who may need them before sending them in to S.A.C.K. Please check out these two great resources here. Keep in mind when donating locally, you should include soap with your sack. Directory of Food Pantries: https://www.foodpantries.org/ Directory of Homeless Shelters: https://www.homelessshelterdirectory.org/ Directory of Little Free Pantries: http://mapping.littlefreepantry.org/ If you do not have anyone local to donate your soap sacks to, Stacy encourages you to look at our partner charities first and if their needs are met, you may ship them to S.A.C.K directly in NJ so Founder, Stacy Wiener can distribute them to organizations that have made requests directly to her. She is always happy to accept empty soap sacks and add soap to them prior to shipment! However, she gladly accepts soap too! While you are not required to attach the tag to your soap sack, it is a nice gesture to do this as it saves the charity time. You will find a link to the soap sack labels in the pattern section.
