Crafting Change believes in a world where crafters feel inspired and empowered to make a difference in the world around them.  Our mission is to provide a collection of projects through trustworthy organizations. Together we will make high-quality items that bring joy, comfort, and support to those in need. Here you will find all of our supporting resources and patterns for our special projects. Every Day Action 01 Read about our partner charity and see the items we are crafting 02 Read the Project Must-Knows 03 Pick a pattern from our approved or suggested pattern collection 04 Shipping address, print a care sli p & tally your donation this is how it works About We are proud to support Every Day Action in North Hollywood, CA. Every Day Action was created and founded by Hillary Cohen and Samantha Luu, two Directors Guild of America Assistant Directors hoping to change the way Hollywood sees food waste. Both women, having worked over 10 years on sets, have continually asked why the leftover gourmet food from catering is thrown out and not donated. Now, this 501(c)3 organization takes perceived waste and redistributes it to the homeless throughout the Los Angeles area. Working closely with Film & Television sets, they take food that would have been thrown away and redistribute it directly to those in need in homeless camps and community fridges throughout the region. Hillary Cohen challenges everyone to ask yourself, "What did you do today to help your community or someone in need?" what are we crafting? Item Requested Craft Type Quantity Requested Quantity Still Needed Bags (Upcycled Feed Bags) Sew 50 26 project must-knows We are partnered with Every Day Action to provide them bags for the Personal Care Kits they put together to distribute to the homeless encampments in the LA area they serve. These kits contain essential personal care items like toothpaste, socks, toothbrushes, combs, feminine hygiene products, soap sacks, and other essentials. We have 4 bag options: 1) Up-cycled Feed bags - Using the model of Every Day Action and taking perceived waste and redistributing it: Our primary bag patterns is an up-cycled bag that reclaims dog food or feed bags and transforms them in to reusable tote bags! We have videos below, here is the basic supply list and how to prep them for sewing: Materials: Feed bags (made of tarp-like plastic) Washing machine Tide with Oxyclean, Oxyclean, or baking soda Strong thread (Bonded UV thread recommended) Heavy Duty Polyester ok. Prepare the bags: Cut off the top and bottom of the bag. Remove any remaining crumbs. Clean the feed bags: Fill your washing machine tub as full as possible. You may have to override your tub's settings to ensure the tank is full Use Tide with Oxyclean, or Oxyclean or Baking Soda with your detergent Avoid harsh chemicals like Borax or bleach. Hang the bags to dry and i f there's still odor or oil, rewash Tips: If a bag doesn't survive the washing process, it wouldn't have survived as a bag for our partner. Toss it and be glad you didn't sew something that wouldn't last! For a larger number of bags or to involve kids, consider using a kiddie pool outside to wash them. Fill it with water, add dish soap and scrub the bags. Rinse thoroughly. By following these steps, you can transform old feed bags into durable and eco-friendly reusable bags to distribute with hygiene supplies to people experiencing homelessness. 2) Tote Bag from a Large Tarp - You can create tote bags that are functional, reusable and very sturdy using a tarp from the hardware store! A camo or dark one is preferred. 3) Large Heavy Duty Tote Bags - You can use our patterns for the Super Tote or similar pattern and create a large heavy duty bag. See below for fabric. 4) Adult sized drawstring backpacks - Sewn drawstring backpacks are a great option as they pull close and keep items from getting lost. See below for fabric. Our neighbors who are unsheltered need bags that are strong and weather resistant. Please use darker colors so they are less likely to show dirt and and stand out, which can be important for safety. Great fabrics: 5) Soap Sacks - Knit/Crochet soap sacks will be placed in hygiene bags. 6) Warm Winter Items- Collecting winter items September 15th through January 30th. Items are only for unsheltered adults and will be skewed 70/30 male Please use darker colors to hide dirt and not stand out, which can be important for safety. Hats & Gloves: Knit/Crochet or single layer fleece Earwarmers FLEECE ONLY We have a special Wish List set up to help us fill up the bags and backpacks we are making. Their hospice census averages about 10 patients per month. 1) Quilts: (Sewn Only) Fabrics for any patient to offer comfort in Hospice. These will be used during care and given to the family to keep after the patient has passed. A variety of fabrics for all genders and interests are appreciated. Nurses pick out just the right quilt for the right patient. Approximate Lapghan size is 36x48"; perfect for folks resting in bed or sitting in a chair. All quilts need to be between 36x48 the smallest and 45x60 the biggest. All styles such as Quilts, rag quilts, fleece/flannel/cotton blankets as long as they are special and will make an impact for the family. 2) Twiddle Muffs: knit/crochet Twiddle muffs are wonderful at providing a comforting sensory experience. Patients will redirect their fidgeting to the muff. items on both the outside and inside keep it fun. 3) FIDDLE MATS Creating a mat is part art, part science. Following the motto "First Do No Harm," Crafting Change has developed this project using science-based research to complement our craftivists' creativity. Why Fiddle Mats? Individuals with Alzheimer's, dementia, or aging often show anxiety or agitation through their hands, fidgeting with clothes, blankets, wounds, or IVs. Fiddle mats provide different textures and activities—such as things to open, push, or slide—to help soothe this fidgeting and restore calm. Crafting Guidelines: Approved Squares: Use squares from our approved library only. Balance: Ensure your mat has a balance of elements from each category: Functional, Sensory, and Auditory. Color Choices: Read our entire document on color choices to ensure your mat soothes, rather than agitates, the patient. We are specifically helping them with their Leaving A Legacy project. The Leaving a Legacy project was created in 2017 as a memorial to Patrice Berman's beloved husband, Eddie. Patrice, the Founder of Raising Hope For Others, took her grief and turned it into this project. His giving spirit and compassion for all is reflected in their comfort bags. The charitable bags are given for free to anyone in need of comfort. This serves a local need, bringing neighbors together to support each other during trying times. The contents of each bag are specifically chosen to meet the needs of its recipient. what are we crafting? At this time they are requesting fabrics to appeal to women. Leaving a Legacy reports to us that their favorite tote is the Two Tone Fabric Tote. 2) Heart Hugs - Our little square of love. Please make these with heart buttons or charms so they have no religious connotations and can be used by anyone for whatever purpose they choose. 3) Port Pillow - This protective device attaches to the seat belt of the car to soften it when going over where a person's port may be. Stuff them very firm so they do the most good. 4) Cosmetic Bags - Any pattern that will finish at approximately 7"x9" is acceptable to Leaving A Legacy. They do prefer a boxed bottom. They fill the cosmetic bag with smaller items like chapstick and lotion before putting in the tote. 5) Chemo Caps - (Sewn/Knit/Crochet) We have many wonderful patterns for sewing, knitting or crocheting up soft and comfortable chemo caps. If knitting/crocheting these caps please follow our approved/tested yarn list. It is especially important for the sensitive scalps of a patient going through chemotherapy to get the right kind of yarn. Our Advisory Board spends a lot of time testing yarns so you don't have to. Please trust that they have our recipients best interest at heart. We have a wide selection of yarns at every price point available on our approved list. List available below in our pattern section or by clicking here. Other Items they collect: Inside the comfort bags Leaving A Legacy distributes, they include many items that can be found at your local Dollar Store. • Board(Bios) | Craftingchange

Learn more about our Executive Board Robyn Peters robyn@craftingchange.org Canadian expat. Retired scientist. Photographer. Alto. Lifelong crafter. After more than a year of daily mask-making for local and national needs, it's time to bring other crafts into the fold. In the early months of Crafting Change, I joined the team as a fiber arts advisor, using my experience as a test knitter to guide craftivists towards using the best choices of yarn and patterns to make items that best served our newfound partner charities. Once we had an enthusiastic team making cold-weather items, I turned my fiber-arts attention to first aid and hygiene needs at home and abroad. My heart is with girls struggling to stay in school in Ghana, and to that end, I spend much of my energy producing menstrual hygiene kits for the Keep Girls In School Campaign. "I cannot do all the good that the world needs. But the world needs all the good that I can do." - Jana Stanfield. Carol Grape carol@craftingchange.org Carol Grape grew up in Maine and received her BFA in Sculpture (1978) from Maine College of Art & Design (formerly Portland School of Art). From there she went to Kent State University for her MFA in Sculpture (1982) then on to NYC for 6 years. In NYC Grape was an artist’s assist, painted apartments and sets, worked for College Art Association, and Bernice Steinbaum Gallery. While in NY she became very involved with the Women’s Caucus for Art and worked for the National President for 2 years. In 1989 she and her future husband Mike moved to Northern Kentucky. Grape began working at the Art Academy of Cincinnati in PR then as the Alumni Director before joining the Adjunct Faculty and eventually Gallery Director and Chair of the Master of Art in Art Education (MAAE). Summer program. In 1994 She joined the faculty at Thomas More College as an adjunct and in 1995 She became the Gallery Director. While in Northern Kentucky Grape showed her work in numerous group exhibitions and two one person shows at the Carnegie Arts Center in Covington. She received a grant from the Kentucky Foundation for Women. Summer of 2004 Carol and her husband Mike moved to Colorado. Grape started her own successful real estate photography business which she did for 16 years before her retirement at the end of 2021. In 2022 she completed her first art installation (Reverent Boundaries) in many years at Thomas More University in Northern KY. Taylor Herbert taylor@craftingchange.org As an attorney with the Public Defender’s office, I have a lot of experience dealing with the most vulnerable and have experienced the vast inequities when it comes to allocation of resources. This was only exacerbated by the pandemic. I was so excited to see my mom get involved in mask making and was able to help with making bias tape for her masks. Helping her with this new endeavor is just a natural progression and I’m extremely honored to be able to help local communities around the country. Joy Russell joy@craftingchange.org I have been an Accounting Consultant for more than 20 years. My heart is with serving children. I am the founder of a non profit serving homeless and foster children of Southern Colorado. I started working as an Admin for Million Mask Challenge and then moved to the GetPPE call team. I have sewn hundreds of children's masks and look forward to creative crafts that can further help kids. My favorite part of working with MMC and GetPPE this past year has been meeting new friends all over the country. It is wonderful to sew and craft with a team while helping others. Martha Richmond martha@craftingchange.org My sister Laura and I learned from an early age that it is better to give than receive. I can’t remember a time when our family wasn’t helping someone. Be it spending time with families evacuated from hurricanes, or volunteering with service groups. Back in 1977 my mom had a devastating cerebral aneurism that resulted in her paralysis on one side. To help her feel useful and part of the community, I started making security blankets. While I stitched, I found myself thinking about who might receive our gift of love. We would take them to the NICU or Ronald McDonald House in San Antonio so she could interact with the children and parents. I would attach a stamped envelope to the blankets where mothers and children would write to her. She developed special bonds with these families and even sent a dedicated pen pal to college and nursing school. And now I send blankets to her children. That experience with mom is what started my love of sewing for others. When Covid mask making had dwindled in earIy 2021, someone recommended the National Day of Service Sew-Along. That day I found a wonderful community of like minded sewists. I was elated when shortly thereafter, Tiffany started Crafting Change. And overnight we needed partners to serve. At the time, I was working with Weld County Foster Care in Greeley, and Pipers Project in Kansas, and soon they were added as two of our first partners. What I love about Crafting Change is not only do we make items for people that need them, but we also are a dedicated group of crafters that need to be creating for others. I am honored to be part of the Board and will help to continue the amazing success of Crafting Change. I love that we have so many partners and projects so everyone can find something they enjoy. Join in on one of our weekly zooms and you will be hooked on the useful tips, and camaraderie. Let’s get Crafting Change! Mary Dredge mary@craftingchange.org I have always been creative and crafty. I was a photo album and card maker for 5 years, studied herbalism for 3 years, and getting sustainable when the pandemic hit. Friends and family were needing masks. My sewing skills were ok, so I dusted off my sewing machine, researched the easiest mask design and I was sewing masks! It was a lonely beginning working full-time virtually during the day and then sewing masks for hours into the night. I loved helping people and found a new purpose – helping others. I wanted to do more to help those in my community. I started sewing pencil pouches for low-income high school students and filling them with basic school supplies. I was making fleece hats for outreach programs and many other small activities. It was great, but still lonely. Then I found Crafting Change by chance, a moment of watching the news on the television, I never watch. There was Tiffany talking about her nonprofit. My husband said – you should check in to that and I did. Best decision ever. After mask making was complete, I found a partner charity that I am passionate about through Crafting Change that I never would have found. By day, I am a Project Manager for a local financial company. I run my own handmade product business supporting sustainability and kindness. I love making herbal remedies and tea and can’t wait for the garden to fill in with herbs. I am always looking for ways to reform the status quo and offer support. Life is so much better doing the things we love with friends! That is Crafting Change. One key reason is that people cannot use government subsidies, such as food stamps, to purchase them. When it comes to deciding on whether to eat vs. buy soap and shampoo, the choice becomes obvious. So, S.A.CK. was created to help fill this need. In September of 2017, S.A.C.K. (Supporting A Community with Kindness), was started as a grassroots effort to connect people from all over the world while crocheting/knitting soap sacks and then donating them (with a bar of soap in each one) to homeless shelters, food pantries, veteran clinics, relief efforts and social service agencies. what are we crafting? Item Requested Craft Type Quantity Requested Quantity Still Needed Soap Sacks ALL 250 24 project must-knows Crafting Change loves to make soap sacks and distribute them to our partner charities throughout the country. Often times we meet their needs really quickly. S.A.C.K and Crafting Change both encourage our volunteers who love making soap sacks to look within their local communities to see who may need them before sending them in to S.A.C.K. Please check out these two great resources here. Keep in mind when donating locally, you should include soap with your sack. She is always happy to accept empty soap sacks and add soap to them prior to shipment! However, she gladly accepts soap too! While you are not required to attach the tag to your soap sack, it is a nice gesture to do this as it saves the charity time. You will find a link to the soap sack labels in the pattern section.
