We have met their current needs! This is a long-term project, we will update here when they need us to ship again! project must-knows We have been asked to help Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains with several items in assistance of patient care. First, we were asked if there is a reusable solution for patient care bags that would offer some happiness, dignity and discretion for patients leaving clinic with medication and materials and resources after medical appointments. Second, The Pocket Heart Hugs will be added to their resource pack given to patients with after their appointments. Prior to distribution, our laminated poem will be added to the Heart Hug by Martha. Third, patients are advised to use a heating pad after certain appointments to help with cramping. Many patients can't afford this. However a rice heating pad made out of flannel holds it's heat for up to an hour! For this partner Fabrics to Avoid: Pastels. They invest in rural and tribal citizen leaders working primarily in the areas of early childhood education, informal science education, service-learning, ecological and human health, and non profit development. They have been integral in the pandemic relief efforts for the Tribes in the entire region. what are we crafting? Item Requested Craft Type Quantity Requested Quantity Still Needed Winter Hats Sew/Knit/Crochet/Loom 2000 451 project must-knows 1. WINTER HATS: Winter in the Northern Rocky Mountains is LONG. We are working with Hopa Mountain to get them a large supply of winter hats for the Elementary aged children they serve. Our goal at Crafting Change is to keep Elementary age kids warm and healthy this winter so they don't miss any school. WINTER HATS KIDS AGES 5-12. As always, they will accept hats for all ages except newborns, but please remember our focus of keeping elementary kids warm and healthy so they don't miss school this winter. Our goal is to send "generational" ha ts. What does that mean? By generational we mean super high quality hats that are made with high quality yarn or fleece that have been made with great technique and have used a pattern and will last to be passed down from one sibling to the next after repeated washings. Hats that will last for years. Our requirements Are they functional and do they keep a person warm? Are they high quality and crafted using a pattern? Did you use good technique? Are your seams hidden and tails woven securely? Would you wear it or give it as a gift to your Mom or best friend? Are they durable and washable? These need to be a tight weave without holes that let the cold air in, but not so tight that the hat is a bowl or helmet. Are they safe and free of embellishments that would be a choking hazards for children? Poms are okay if they are washable; if they are not washable (like faux fur) they must be removable. Don't infantilize the kids, functionality and warmth trumps fun for the harsh weather they face. Please peek at our suggested patterns to get an idea of what Hopa Mountain has asked for. Hats need to cover the ears of the person wearing them. Use any pattern you like basing it off of what Hopa Mountain has suggested below. Our Advisory Board is continuously testing yarn by using it and washing/drying it at least 5 times to see how it holds up. Please review our Recommended & Tested Yarn List for our suggestions, though this list is by no means exhaustive. Recommended & Tested Yarn List As a reminder, using yarn that is more than 5 years old, yarn without a label or yarn from a thrift store is ill advised. Yarn technology has changed a lot in the last few years. If you are in doubt about your pattern or your yarn, please contact our Fiber Arts Advisory Committee Member Robyn Peters robyn@craftingchange.org . We also have a few sewn patterns for polar fleece hats. We ask that you buy high quality fleece that does not pill and only use patterns that are 2 layers. They establish medical clinics in rural Ghana that provide care previously unavailable in those areas. They also have a program called "Keep Girls in School Campaign". The Yonkofa Project has teamed up with Crafting Change to provide menstrual hygiene kits to middle school girls, bandages for the rural clinics and hospitals and items for the Half Assini NICU. what are we crafting? DON'Ts: - No camouflage fabric, as it's exclusively used by the military in Ghana. - Avoid religious and holiday-themed prints (Easter Bunnies, 4th of July, Thanksgiving, Santa). - Exclude fabrics depicting drugs, alcohol, tobacco, or weapons. 2) Reusable Menstrual Pads Each kit we make includes 2 medium and 2 heavy pads. Pads must have 1 or 2 layers of Zorb, a bottom layer of PUL, and Kam Snaps closures. Choose dark, colorful, patterned, or busy fabrics for your topper to help hide stains. Use any template shape in sizes between 8.5" and 10.5" in length are accepted. When shipping your completed pads, please label them by absorbency and length for easier sorting. We offer resources for pad construction, including a video tutorial for first-time makers. Contact us for assistance or to order discount supplies. . KAM SNAPS: Each pad must have 2 size 20 Kam Snaps applied on the wing. Refer to our video tutorial for assistance. If applying your own snaps, test each snap multiple times to ensure security, functionality, and that satisfying snap sound. We are happy to apply snaps for you if you have a physical limitation that makes it difficult for you to apply them. Interested in purchasing Kam Snap supplies? We recommend buying directly from Kam Snaps, a family-owned small business. They offer a great starter set with pliers and snaps! Check that kit out here , or browse the rest of their site! 3) Wet Bags Wet bags serve two main functions: holding soiled pads while girls are at school and serving as a vessel for cleaning pads at home. Wet bags must be waterproof. We have one approved pattern for these bags, which has proven effective. Watch our video tutorial on properly sealing these bags. For any questions, email Martha for assistance. 4) Sewn Soap Sack The Sewn Soap Sack made from a washcloth is tailored for The Menstrual Hygiene Kit Resembling a washcloth, it offers familiarity the for girls while featuring a twill loop for convenient hanging and drying of soap. Please ensure accurate measurements and avoid using white or light colors as these will be used during menstrual cycles and get stained with blood. 5) Crochet & Knit Bandages- We're crafting cotton bandages for rural clinics/hospitals in Western Ghana. Only 5 approved yarns and one specific pattern are permitted for this project. Participants must be experienced crocheters or knitters capable of checking gauge. While the pattern is simple, consistency and gauge are crucial. Start with 2 skeins of yarn for your first 2 bandages that will be quality checked by our medical advisor before ordering more yarn. Find all necessary information on this information sheet. 7) Receiving Blankets for the NICU- We're creating swaddling/receiving blankets for the NICU at Half Assini Government Hospital in Half Assini, Ghana. Blankets should measure between 36x36 and 40x40 inches square. All blankets, regardless of style, must have finished hems. Narrow rolled serger hems are recommended for single-layer blankets if you have a serger. They have expanded their mission to now distribute their bags of love to children in foster care, those that are unsheltered and victims of domestic violence. what are we crafting? We have fulfilled all of their needs to date! We are currently awaiting the charity to update their needs list. project must-knows 1. Burrito Pillow Case- These are for all ages 5-18. All pillows are all the standard size pillow no matter the age you are making for. It is appreciated if fun fabrics are used, and kids love licensed prints like Marvel, Comic Book characters like Batman and Superman, Harry Potter, Disney. The pillowcase is made from three coordinating materials. The finished size should be 20”-21” wide by 30-32” long which fits a standard pillow. Please use soft, non scratchy material: woven quilter’s cotton, woven cotton blends as well as flannel. Fabric prints to avoid would be ones with drugs, alcohol, weapons religious, or holiday prints fabric with the words mommy, daddy or family or any variant (grandma, etc.) 2. Knit/Crochet Soap Sacks- Please ensure your soap sacks end up being the standard size of a soap sack 4"x6". When soap is distributed it has to be in it's original packaging which is often a box. Often soap sacks are too small. You can use a 4x6 index card as a handy guide to keep in your project bag. It is a good idea to check your pattern every once in awhile to ensure you are meeting the size guidelines. Thank you.
